La genèse de la réforme monétaire augustéenne
Résumé
The Augustan monetary reform is the culmination of a process of technological innovations that began in the second century BC. The numerous analyses of Republican coins published for the first time show that pure copper was struck in that period. As for the orichalcum, it is used from the beginning of the first century BC, in the East first, followed by Caesar. The coherent system of the subdivisions of the denarius is borrowed from Antony. This article attempts, in a synthetic way, to show the Augustan borrowings that will culminate in the reform of 23 BC.
La réforme monétaire augustéenne n'est que l'aboutissement d'un processus d'innovations techniques qui a débuté dès le IIe siècle avant J.-C. Les nombreuses analyses de monnaies républicaines publiées pour la première fois montrent que le cuivre pur a été frappé dès cette époque. Quant à l'orichalque, il est utilisé dès le début du Ier siècle avant J.-C., en Orient d'abord, par César ensuite. Cet article tente, de façon synthétique, de montrer les emprunts augustéens qui aboutiront à la réforme de 23 avant J.-C.
